A Quiet Sunday in My December Kitchen
A quiet December pause with a simple winter soup, a delicate shortbread cookie, and a moment to breathe.
There are December days that feel like a whirlwind — the kind where the kitchen hums from dawn to dusk, the grocery lists multiply, and even the oven threatens rebellion. Yesterday was one of those days. Four markets, countless ingredients, and an oven that really ought to know better than to misbehave in December.
And yet… today is Sunday.
A slower day.
A breathing day.
The kind of day that invites you to step away from the rush and into something smaller, quieter, and more human. The kind of day where a simmering pot, a warm mug, the voice of a dear friend, or an inspirational verse do more for the soul than any perfectly checked-off holiday list.
So today, I’m leaning into the pause — into the gentle rhythm of a winter kitchen. Nothing elaborate, nothing demanding. Just simple comfort. A softly fragrant soup. A delicate cookie. A warm cup between my hands.
If your December has been bustling too, consider this your invitation to slow with me.
A Simple Winter Soup
Root Vegetable Soup
There is something grounding about root vegetables in winter — carrots, potatoes, yams, ginger… with their quiet sweetness, nourishing properties, and earthiness. This soup tastes like stillness, like taking a sweet breath and preparing for the week ahead. A bowl you can linger over while the lights from the tree glow softly nearby.
A Snowflake to Savor
Snowflake Shortbread Cookies
If ever a cookie captured winter’s quiet beauty, it’s these. Buttery, tender, and dusted just enough to feel magical. They pair perfectly with tea and with slow December afternoons. Every time I bake them, I’m reminded that the season’s beauty often lives in its simplest moments.
A Cup to Warm Your Hands
Cinnamon Tea (2-ingredients)
Just cinnamon, simmered gently, filling the kitchen with a warmth that feels almost medicinal. This is my December ritual — a calming, fragrant cup that asks nothing more of me than to sit for a moment and enjoy it.
If you prefer something a touch cozier, a London Fog is lovely this time of year too — soft, steamed, and perfumed with Earl Grey.
A Wish for Your Week
Wherever you are today — bustling, baking, resting, or running errands — I hope you find a moment to pause, breathe, and fall in love with the season all over again.
I’ll be sharing weekly posts through December, shifting them toward the middle of the week when inboxes feel a little calmer. And in January, Soup Sunday will return, refreshed for the new year.
Until then, may your kitchen be warm, your oven cooperative, and your December everything you hope it to be!
“The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting.”
— Louisa May Alcott, Little Women
See you next week. Have a beautiful Sunday.
