One Simple Thing: Apples
Every September, I can’t resist the first crisp, sweet, and juicy apples ripening on the trees. Whether it’s a quick trip over the mountains to the Eastern Washington orchards or simply hauling home a bushel from my farmers’ market, that first armful of apples feels like the true beginning of fall.
I grew up with apples in my blood — my parents were raised in orchards — so it’s no surprise that when the leaves begin to transform into glorious shades of autumn, I have apples on my mind. I’ve long dreamed of pressing my own cider. Someday, I’ll make that dream happen. Until then, it remains one of those hopeful, delicious ideas that returns every September like clockwork.
The first apples of the season rarely last long in my kitchen. They’re crisp, tart, and somehow taste fresher and sweeter than any fruit this summer. However, I will likely amend that during strawberry season next year!
While I use many of them to slice and tuck lunches or salads, the very first apple bake is always the same: a simple apple crisp. Warm, fragrant with cinnamon, and just enough to make the house smell like fall has truly arrived.
First Apple Recipes of Fall
Every season has its “firsts” in the kitchen — that one recipe you know marks the change of time. In spring, it might be asparagus; in fall, it’s always apples or pumpkin. After a day of apple picking, I usually turn to one of these simple apple recipes first… with a batch of apple butter not far behind.
I’ll be sharing more apple desserts in our Apple Recipe Collection this Friday on 31Daily. You’ll find recipes from pies and crisps to breads and cakes (even a “visiting apple cake”). It’s one of my favorite roundups of the season.
Before I go, I’d love to ask:
👉 Do you have an apple press you love (or one you’d recommend)? I’m still dreaming of making cider at home and would be grateful for any advice.
Until then, here’s to the first apples of fall — crisp, tart, and full of promise.
