One Simple Thing: Berry Stained Fingers
Favorite berry recipes, sweet summer stories, and one simple thing.
There’s something about July that stains our fingertips with blackberry juice, raspberry seeds, and the sweet, fleeting taste of summer. I’ve come to love the way berries mark the season: a little messy, a little wild, and all the more delicious for it.
In the Pacific Northwest, we often pick them from wild vines, bring them home in baskets, and eat more than we can ever manage to freeze.
I remember one summer picking blackberries with my German grandmother. She wore long sleeves, even in the heat. As a young teen, I didn’t think it was necessary — I wanted a suntan, after all. But the scratches up and down my arms for the next couple of weeks proved that she was right all along.
Even now, I can’t resist popping sun-warmed berries straight from the bush or tossing a handful into a bowl of cream or topping a simple summer pound cake with assorted berries.
This time of year, I find myself baking with berries, layering them into salads, spooning them over yogurt, and stirring them into quick jams. Whether you gather yours at the market or along a country trail, now’s the moment to enjoy every last bite.

Feel free to print or pin this week’s quote — a simple reminder of summer’s sweetest moments.
“It’s the simple things — the stained fingers, the berry bowl on the counter — that make summer taste like home.”

One Simple Thing
Let this be the week you eat more berries than you freeze. Let the juice stain your fingers, the pie crust flake onto your lap, and the sweetness linger a little longer than expected.
With berry-stained hands, a fragrant kitchen, and a summer-loving heart, until next week.
Stephanie
