"Spring at the Market: Notes from Pickering Barn"
What I Found, What I’m Cooking, and a Few Things You Might Love Too
This morning began, as so many Saturdays do, with a latte in hand and the clang of a cowbell.
That’s the signal that the Issaquah Farmers’ Market — tucked beside the historic Pickering Barn — is open for the day. Early risers like me always pause, cheer, and smile. It’s one of my favorite ways to begin a weekend.
With my market tote in hand and coffee in the other, I wandered the rows of fresh produce, fragrant herbs, and flower stands. The season’s best was waiting: sweet, juicy strawberries (I brought home half a flat), tender baby spring onions, local Yakima Valley asparagus — always close to my heart with five generations of family roots there — and jars of golden local honey.

I also couldn’t resist stopping by a local bakery stall for a few danishes to enjoy with coffee this weekend.
Back in my kitchen, pie crust is cooling, strawberries are macerating, and I’m thinking about dinner — which will most certainly feature that Yakima asparagus.
If you're as inspired by the season as I am, here are a few of my favorite asparagus recipes from 31Daily to enjoy this weekend and beyond:
