The First Gatherings of Summer
A few simple ideas for garden parties, tea tables, easy suppers, and the first long days of June.
There is a certain kind of shift that happens at the end of May.
The calendar may not officially say summer quite yet, but the table begins to know.
Meals move outside. Suppers become simpler. A bowl of berries suddenly feels like dessert. Herbs grow faster than we can use them. Afternoon tea feels lighter, garden parties feel possible, and something as simple as a roll filled with cool shrimp salad can feel exactly right.
This is the time of year when food becomes a little more relaxed, but no less beautiful.
And maybe that is what I love most about early summer.
It doesn’t ask for perfection. It asks for a pitcher of tea, something fresh from the market, a few flowers from the garden or grocery store, and a reason to gather.
This week on 31Daily, I’ve been thinking about that gentle beginning.
Today, I’m sharing New England-Style Shrimp Rolls — cool, simple, and just right for warm afternoons, casual lunches, or an easy summer supper. Later this week, I’ll be sharing a Lady Charlotte dessert, the kind of beautiful make-ahead sweet that feels especially lovely for showers, teas, and summer gatherings.
And this weekend, I’ll be turning toward garden parties — those easy, gracious summer gatherings that don’t need to be complicated to feel memorable.
Because sometimes the best summer table is simple:
a chilled salad
something grilled or tucked into a roll
a pitcher of iced tea
a make-ahead dessert
a few flowers
and people you love gathered nearby
That’s enough.
More than enough, really.
As June begins, I’m hoping to share more ideas for those kinds of meals here — the ones that feel doable, seasonal, and quietly special.
A few things I’m loving for the table right now:
Shrimp rolls for an easy lunch or light supper.
A simple garden party menu with make-ahead recipes.
Afternoon tea served with lighter summer sweets.
Breakfast ideas for Father’s Day weekend.
No-bake and make-ahead desserts for the warm days ahead.
And, always, recipes that help us gather without making the day feel harder.
I’ve been reminded lately that hospitality does not have to be elaborate. Sometimes it is simply noticing the season and making a little room for it.
A bowl of fresh, fragrant strawberries.
A homemade sauce from garden-fresh ingredients (like this strawberry rhubarb sauce).
A plate of tea sandwiches with simple summer ingredients.
A snack cake made ahead and dusted with powdered sugar.
A cold drink poured over ice.
A table set outside because the golden hour is too pretty not to.
That is where summer begins for me.
Not all at once, but slowly — in small meals, simple recipes, and the first gatherings of the season.
I’m so glad to be stepping into it with you.
You’ll find the newest summer recipes and gathering ideas this week on 31Daily, beginning with today’s shrimp rolls.
Here’s to a beautiful week,
Stephanie
