Three Things for a Simple Holiday Table
There is a moment every December when, despite the lights and music and joyful noise, the pace begins to feel… just a little too quick. The lists get longer, the days get shorter, and the kitchen — our favorite place — can start to feel like one more thing to manage instead of a place to breathe.
But somewhere between the wrapping paper and the simmering pots, I’ve learned something: the loveliest holiday tables are often the simplest ones. The ones where the food is warm, the candles are lit, and the host is rested enough to look around the room and see the people gathered there.
I’ve come to believe that a rested table — one made with intention instead of expectation — might be the most beautiful table of all. It’s the kind that invites everyone to loosen their shoulders, take a deeper breath, and settle in.
One Simple Thing
This week, if you feel the tug of holiday busyness, consider choosing one thing to simplify.
Maybe it’s setting a table with evergreen branches instead of fussing with centerpieces.
Perhaps it’s choosing an easy dessert instead of an elaborate one.
Maybe it’s letting a store-bought appetizer take the place of something homemade.
Sometimes the most generous thing we can offer — to ourselves and those we love — is a little more rest, a little more ease, a little more grace.
Three Festive but Simple Recipes
As the holidays draw nearer and the pace quickens just a bit, I find myself leaning toward dishes that feel festive but don’t ask too. The kind of recipes that slip easily into a weeknight or a gathering, bringing comfort and light without creating a flurry of extra steps.
If you’re looking for something beautiful to add to your holiday table — something celebratory yet easy — here are three “simple” recipes I return to year after year. Each one invites ease, warmth, and a little December sparkle.
1. Winter Green Salad
Sometimes the table needs something bright and uncluttered. A winter citrus salad brings color and light with almost no work at all: slices of orange or grapefruit, a drizzle of good olive oil, a handful of herbs, and maybe a scattering of pomegranate seeds. It glows on a holiday table and pairs with everything.
2. Spinach Puff Pastry Christmas Tree
This is one of those recipes that looks far more impressive than it is. Puff pastry, a simple spinach filling, and a few careful twists create a whimsical, savory Christmas tree that feels instantly festive. It’s golden, fragrant, and a delight to pull apart at the table. Perfect for gatherings, but equally lovely alongside a bowl of soup or a cozy December supper.
3. Cranberry–Orange Muffins
And when the table calls for something sweet but effortless, these cranberry–orange muffins are my favorite December treat. They come together in minutes, bright with citrus and dotted with tart berries, the kind of bake that fills the kitchen with a soft, sunny fragrance even on the coldest days. They’re simple, wholesome, and just sweet enough—perfect with tea, lovely at brunch, or tucked beside a candlelit supper when the evening needs a little lift of lightness.
Thank you for gathering here with me at this little winter table. Wherever this week finds you — wrapping gifts, lighting candles, welcoming family, or settling into a quiet evening — I hope you find small pockets of rest amid the season’s good busyness. A simple meal. A warm kitchen. A quiet moment to breathe.
I’m grateful for your presence, your company, and the beautiful way this community feels in December.
Until next week,
Stephanie
